There is a good chance you have found this page because you have discovered something on the net that has caught your attention, and not necessarily in a good way.

Your natural instinct is to act, react or maybe even attack! Take a few moments to collect your thoughts, and read the tips listed here.

There are several actions that can make the situation worse, so read up. If you end up wanting to discuss your situation in confidence, we would be happy to give you an accurate assessment of the damage, and what it will take to control it.

Have you attempted to contact the website where the negative result is posted? In some cases an apology, product replacement or credit will satisfy the other party, and persuade them to remove the negative content. Note that some unscrupulous sites have a “mitigation fee” to remove the data, we have a word for this, “blackmail” - don't pay it!

Have you consulted your attorney? Individuals and small businesses tend to think twice about engaging in expensive legal battles. I have seen a well placed “cease and desist” order do the trick. Unfortunately, those unscrupulous sites have multiple layers of protection, or are located on foreign soil so legal service is impossible.

Do Not Engage! Some of the sites will allow you to respond online to tell your side of the story. Don't! This will only add content to the negative result making it stronger in the search engine results.

Additionally, refrain from creating a blog, web page, or area on your site to fight the offending material. This will only attract the attention of visitors that had no idea there was anything negative to begin with.

Pay Per Click – We often recommend using PPC advertising for a limited number of keywords that the negative results appear for. An example would be a negative result that claims your “Customer Service Sucks” - Purchase a PPC advertisement in the #1 position that leads directly to your customer service department, and beef up the landing page to support your position.

If you have found the negative result while searching for your brand or name, DO NOT click on the result the search engine produces!

The search engines record how many clicks a particular url gets for a given search term. The more clicks, the more relevant Google will figure the results is.

The problem is searchers tend to jump on “bad news” like “a hobo on a ham sandwich” so weak listings maintain high rankings because of the high click-thru rate they get.

Resist the urge to click on the negative result again and again – you just give it more power!
