The New Google – How Does Your Site Rank?

Google’s new search tool is in beta testing right now, called Google Caffeine. This will eventually replace the current search tool on google.com. The stated goal of the product is to deliver more relevant search results, as quickly as possible. That’s the short version, you can read the whole enchilada over at the Google Webmaster Blog or view an independent Caffeine speed test.

So what does this mean for RightNow clients? Well, we certainly like the faster part. The “more relevant” part sounds good also, but remember that it is a mathematical equation that determines relevancy. Google takes hundreds of factors (yes hundreds!) about every site to determine which web sites belong at the top of the heap for any given search term.

Initial tests show RightNow client’s sites performing well in the new Google. Remember that Google is still tweaking the ranking factors, so the public release will be different than the current version.

I was hesitant to place this note in our monthly newsletter. Inevitability someone is going to run this tool and come to the conclusion that the sky is falling! If you see something that concerns you, just pick up the phone and call us — that’s why you hired RightNow as your professional SEO consultant.

Here are two tools to test how your site performs in the new Google Search tool.

How Fast is Your Website? Does it Matter? Test it!

How Fast is Your WebsiteDoes the amount of time it takes your web site to load have an effect on your Google Search Results? As with all things “Google” the answer is Yes, No and Maybe all at the same time!

YES – Adwords: Website load times have a direct impact on placement and cost for Adwords Pay-Per-Click advertising. Google states that Landing Page load speeds “will begin to impact your landing page quality and, therefore, your Quality Score.” This means that slow pages will pay more. NO – Organic Results: As of this writing Google does not currently penalize sites with poor load times unless the site “times out” and the Googlebot Spider can not access your sites content and interior pages.

MAYBE – The Future: Its safe to speculate that in the (very near) future Google will be adding a “load time” calculation to its organic results ranking algorithm. It really makes sense when you think about it – slow sites create a poor user experience. Google Search Results are one of the primary products they deliver to customers, so why serve up a frustrating slowpoke. If your slow, your gonna go!

How fast is slow? A reliable source has indicated that your site should load in less than 4 seconds according to this tool – webwait.com

What can you do if your site is dragging its feet? There are a number of elements that determine the speed your site is rendered. Hosting and servers, site structure, graphic design and on-page scripting all contribute to your sites delivery speed.

Google Offers Additional Control Over Search Results

Website owners have received the ability to customize the way their listings appear in the search engine results. In the past the only variables you were able to control were the title tag and the meta description. Hold on to your hat folks, Google has just introduced Structured Data Mark Up.

Marking up structured data allows you to define review ratings, product images, prices, business addresses, professional titles and more. The data is displayed using two standards; microformats and RDFa formats.

The new format is starting to appear in Google search results, primarily for restaurant listings. Sites such as Yelp quickly embraced the new display options.

    EXAMPLE:

Sites that offer up directory and review results have the most obvious applications. But, like all other optimization options, crafty web designers and SEO’s will find unique and interesting ways of implementing these tools.

Google’s Wonder Wheel of Wacky Search Options

Google Search has added a set of tools to the search results pages, called Search Options. The Options tab is located just below the search term entry box. Clicking the options opens a panel of filters that lets the searcher drill down by media type, index time, results type, timeline and my favorite, the Wonder Wheel.

The Wonder Wheel tab opens your search in a graphical flash animation that offers up closely related search terms. Clicking on these related terms expands and defines your search visually, opening new wheels and spokes. Wacky Search! Check it out, watch the video!

Making SEO Progress on a Tightened Budget

With tight budgets these days I get asked regularly, “what can I do to improve my business online in 2009 even if I can’t expand my budget?”

I have found, many entrepreneurs and small business people are in the dark when it comes to gauging how successful they are with their web marketing. It’s not their fault. They wear a lot of hats on a day to day basis.

But here is something you can do for FREE that will have good implications for years to come. Google offers free traffic analyzation software. The sooner you get Google Analytics installed correctly on your web site, the sooner you will have a better handle on where your web business is headed.

If you install this software before 1/1/09 you can have statistics for the entire 2009 year. Because, it really takes gathering this information for a year before you can begin to compare and discover success or failure in your online efforts. For over ten years we have been supplying our clients with regular Search Engine Ranking Reports. In fact, of course, they ride along in our monthly newsletter to you ! What we are now beginning to see is the need for more decision making information than just “where does the website rank”. That is one part of the equation. But now that you have established a presence on the web, it’s time to improve ! That’s where analyzing same-month, year over year data can really come into play. A successful search engine optimization campaign should show an increasing amount of traffic from the search engines. So if you had 100 visitors from Google in January 2009 and when we get to January 2010, we find that you receive 125 visitors from Google a year later, that could be construed as a 25% increase in search engine traffic, year over year.

We would be happy to help you install Google Analytics, or consult your web developer. It is important that the tracking code be placed on every page of your site. And when you add new pages, that you include the code to them as well.

In concert with all of this, we are unveiling a new two-tiered Maintenance Package to our clients. Right now, our clients go into SEO maintenance after we have delivered three Ranking Reports. You pay a nominal amount and we continue to send you reports and are available for consulting on any web marketing matter, as well, as long as you tell us you have changed or added a web page, unlimited SEO work on those new and changed pages. This activity keeps your site fully optimized to capture the maximum possible traffic. Without this, your web site would slowly erode over the course of time until it was no longer optimized causing a loss of search engine rankings. Now, we will continue to offer this super, low priced retainer service. But additionally, we will offer a higher level of Maintenance to those clients wishing more. This level will consist of quarterly Analytics Review as well as annual Usability Review, designed to wring the most out of your Web Presence as is possible.

If you are interested in learning more about a more aggressive Maintenance package going forward into the new year, just drop us a line. But, even if you don’t, take a few moments to put traffic tracking into play before the first of the year, so you can have a full year of data to compare this time next year!
